ABOUT US!

The Ann Arbor Music Center was founded in 1998 by musician, composer and teacher Alex Johnson. The goal was to offer a music education experience that was unavailable anywhere else. Today we offer private lessons in many instruments and band classes to students of all ages and at all levels of experience.

Because there have never been standards in rock music education, students have always been on their own if they want to learn music fundamentals. At the AAMC we go beyond the garden-variety music lesson. Our students learn more than just where to put their fingers. We teach a well rounded music lesson, rich in fundamentals and strong in modern and classical technique. (more below)

Our students have unique opportunities for performance and enrichment. The Rock Band School (ages 8-18) is a program designed to teach every aspect of rock performance.

The Rock Band program began in June of 2001 when Alex realized that very few of his students had anyone to jam with. He asked some students if they'd like to take a class in how to be a rock band. What has evolved is a program that can make a beginning guitarist, bassist or drummer into a valuable member of a working rock band.

The programs at the AAMC are offered year 'round but summer is when we offer all day activities. Alex has created some really exciting summer camps for young rock musicians. Whether a student has been playing for years of just a few weeks we have something to keep kids busy all day for weeks at a time.
